There is a greater need than ever for EV charging stations as their popularity continues to soar. Even while the infrastructure for charging electric vehicles in public places is expanding rather quickly, many EV owners opt to plug their cars in at home because it’s more convenient and frequently less expensive.

You may still connect an EV automobile to a regular three-pin socket. However, many EV manufacturers only advise doing so as a last resort. Besides, it would take an unimaginable 42 hours to charge most EVs using a regular socket. Installing a dedicated electric car charger, also known as a wall box, at home is a popular alternative for EV owners.

However, selecting the ideal one can be tricky. Here is the ultimate guide on everything you need to know about installing an EV home charger.

What kind of device is an EV home charger?

Home chargers are often modest boxes attached to the side of a wall, house, or garage rather than the large, intrusive installations you find in grocery and service station parking lots. While some are particularly covert, other manufacturers provide more ’boutique’ chargers that are customizable.

Many EV owners qualify for the “standard installation,” which includes fitting the charger to a permanent structure, running up to 15 meters of cable from the electric board/meter to the home charger, and running half a meter of cable through the main wall. You can get more assistance from a charger installation.

You have to choose a convenient location.

Some chargers can be mounted outdoors, while others can only be mounted indoors. You will need to acquire a charger made for inside use if you don’t have a garage or other enclosed space. Make sure the model you choose has a cable long enough to extend to the charge port on your electric vehicle (EV). Note that you may have challenges if your charger is from the charge port on the other side of the garage.

Although it may seem easy, there is no purpose in even considering installing an EV charger at home if one does not have access to a parking area. Renters must also speak with their landlord to see if a socket may be installed in their apartment.

Your electrical infrastructure

When you’ve chosen a location for your EV charger, check to be sure your home’s electrical circuits can handle it. Most Level 2 chargers (the kind that is frequently used in home and small business upgrades) need 240 volts, as opposed to the usual 110 volts. Additionally, these chargers consume much more current than the typical home appliance.

Chargers are getting stronger as EV batteries grow in size. Newer/faster chargers have a maximum amp draw of 80 amps, whereas other chargers only draw up to 48 amps. On the other hand, typical home appliances like a vacuum cleaners only consume 12amps. Therefore you will need stronger circuit breakers to safeguard your existing circuits from this much pull.

It is best to leave this intricate circuitry and potentially hazardous voltage level to trained professionals. A licensed electrician can set up your electrical service and ensure you adhere to all local laws for safety and proper operation.

How fast do you want your EV to charge?

How rapidly you want your vehicle to charge is usually the key consideration when searching for an EV charger HK. The most common power outputs are between 3.6kW and 7.4kW, with a maximum of 11kW and 22kW. It’s crucial to note that this is an alternating current (AC) charge rather than the faster DC charge that rapid chargers use. The latter is the headline charge time that manufacturers typically prefer to boast about.

Although a 22kW charger will charge an EV much more quickly, not all EVs can handle that kind of charge, and the typical home is unlikely to have the infrastructure to support that amount of charging.

Take the Audi e-Tron as an example; a 3.6kW charger would require 26 hours to complete the charge, whereas a 7kW charger would require 14 hours. At 22kW, it would finish in nine hours, which would be quicker.

Regular vs. smart EV charger

Standard and more sophisticated “smart” chargers are the two different EV chargers available. With the latter, you can perform more complex tasks like scheduling time changes to take advantage of lower electricity prices and monitoring the charge. Although it costs a little more, the latter alternative is more desirable. Also, only “smart” chargers are eligible for a government electric car charger grant.

Tethered or not.

When investing in an EV charger, you have to pick between a tethered and an untethered charger—that is, whether you want the wire to be permanently connected to the electric charger or whether you prefer to constantly plug in your cable. Thankfully, it is one of the simpler choices a consumer may make. Although it depends on your preference, the former is more convenient but costs more.

How much does a home EV charger cost?

The pricing varies between vendors and is based on the charging speed of the specific charger. Luckily, the government is still trying to promote the use of electric vehicles; therefore, it offers customers an electric car charger grant, which provides up to 75% of the cost of installing a private EV charger. Most electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles are eligible for the grant, and each car is limited to one charge point.

When purchasing an EV home charger, you also need to make sure the charger is “smart” and qualifies for the grant (if that’s what you want). Although the installation cost is typically included in the grant, this isn’t always the case. A typical tethered 7kW home charger (the most popular option) will cost between $500 and $650, including the cost of installation and the grant subtracted.

The conclusion

Installing an EV home charger is not as simple as plugging in your vacuum cleaner, and it requires a state-of-the-art electrical interface. Therefore you must make all the due evaluations when installing one in your home.

Majority of Europeans Want Ban on Petrol and Diesel Cars by 2030

Petrol and diesel cars are considered two of the most dangerous means of transportation because of their contribution to global warming and their effect on the environment in general. The emissions released through their tailpipes are highly toxic and polluting.

Diesel cars used to be the popular alternative for those who prefer environmentally friendly vehicles, but only until the Dieselgate scandal revealed that their emissions affect the global climate, environment, and human health.

The diesel emissions scam initially involved German carmaker Volkswagen and exposed the dangers of diesel vehicles equipped with defeat devices. These vehicles have extremely high nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and have contributed to the rise in hospital visits and admissions, emergency room and GP visits, school and work absences, chronic respiratory conditions, and premature death.

As a result, governments, environmental volunteers and organisations have come up with several mandates, programs, and laws intended to curb toxic petrol and diesel emissions.

In the UK, the government has established Clean Air Zones (CAZs), areas where vehicles with high emissions are not allowed to enter unless they pay assigned charges. London’s version of this is the ULEZ or Ultra-Low Emissions Zones, a project of the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan.

Post-Dieselgate scandal, car manufacturers have also drawn up several measures that allow them to correct their mistake of using illegal defeat devices. Many of the carmakers involved in the diesel emissions scandal have recalled thousands upon thousands of affected vehicles and had them corrected with engines that follow the right emissions standards.

European cities have also taken action and are preparing for the phase out of petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030. Many cities have also started working on realising their zero-emissions campaign by slowly switching to electric vehicles.

Petrol and diesel cars ban

In a survey conducted in 2021, most of Europe’s residents strongly support the phase out of petrol and diesel vehicle sales beginning the year 2030. The poll, which was carried out on behalf of environmental campaigners, had a total of approximately 10,050 respondents from 15 cities (including Budapest, Warsaw, and London).

Of the total respondents, around 63% expressed their support for selling only emissions-free vehicles in Europe after 2030. Only 29% of the over 10,000 surveyed said they did not support the end of petrol and diesel vehicle sales. Around 8% of the respondents were undecided.

Transport & Environment’s Julia Poliscanova shared that residents of cities are the ones who are most exposed to high levels of toxic air pollution, which is why they strongly oppose the selling of internal combustion engines. They do not want to delay the ban any longer.

The European Union has promised to come up with clearer and stricter emissions limits for vehicles and an expansion of the electric charging infrastructure.

In June 2022, the European Parliament voted to stop the use of combustion engines by the year 2035, a decision that is in line with the European Union’s fleet-wide goal of reducing toxic emissions coming from new light commercial vehicles and passenger cars.

How do defeat devices fit into the equation?

Defeat devices play an important role in the emissions story, especially in the UK and Europe. These devices were what government and environmental authorities found in diesel engines of popular carmakers such as Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, and BMW.

A defeat device is illegal because it is programmed to detect when a vehicle is in the lab for an emissions test. As testing starts, the device artificially reduces emissions levels to within the limits that the World Health Organization set. When driven in real-world road conditions though, the vehicle emits extremely high levels of nitrogen oxides – in amounts that are multiple times over the EU and WHO limit.

Thus, vehicles with defeat devices are dirty and toxic. They are highly polluting and endanger the environment and human health.

What does nitrogen oxide do?

Nitrogen oxide or NOx, the gas that diesel vehicles emit, has nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) as its main components. When it reacts with some compounds, NOx forms acid rain and smog, which highly pollute the environment.

NOx also creates ground-level ozone, which can harm vegetation by stunting the growth of plants and crops. Vegetation also becomes more susceptible to frost and damage.

Exposure to nitrogen oxide can significantly impact a person’s health. Some of its effects include headaches, breathing problems, bronchitis, emphysema, and other respiratory issues. Serious cases can lead to increased risks for cardiovascular diseases and cancer, chronic lung problems, asphyxiation, laryngospasm, and premature death.

Car owners whose vehicles were fitted with defeat devices are encouraged to file an emissions claim against their manufacturers. The action is one way of holding carmakers responsible for the devastating effects of diesel emissions. It will also allow affected car owners to receive compensation for the inconvenience and stress their carmaker caused them by mis-selling polluting vehicles.

How to Make Money with Your Diesel Truck

Source: Virrage Images/

Buying a diesel truck is a great investment, especially if you plan on putting your vehicle to work. These machines are capable of hauling and towing thousands of pounds of inventory. You also don’t need to get a college degree to start making money off your truck. As long as you meet the requirements, and have a clean driving record, you can quickly start hauling with a commercial driver’s license (CDL). You don’t have to be a truck driver to earn a living with your vehicle. The internet has opened up a whole new world of possibilities. Learn how to make a profit off your diesel truck to cash in on your new investment.

Start Hauling

The best and easiest way to make money with a diesel truck is to use it to transport products and items from one location to another. Trucks power around 70% of all goods moving through the supply chain and business is booming. The American Trucking Association says we will likely see a 24% increase in national trucking freight volume. That’s good news for just about anyone who owns a diesel truck.

If you want to get into the trucking business, you’ll need to get a CDL, as required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), and register with your state’s trucking authority when operating a vehicle weighing more than 10,000 gross vehicle weight (GVW). You also need to be at least 21 to transport goods across state lines.

Focus on a particular type of product or good that you feel comfortable transporting. You can also attach a trailer to the back to increase your storage volume. The goal is to connect with a few regular clients that will provide a steady stream of work. You don’t have to drive all the way across the country to make money. Consider partnering with local, underserved organizations to reduce your traveling time.

Hauling heavy loads that utilize most of your vehicle’s towing capacity will put added pressure on your truck. You will need to maintain your vehicle regularly when you tow for a living. This includes changing the oil, cleaning the filters, and replacing your exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) coolers as needed. The EGR cooler reduces the temperature of the exhaust gas before sending it back to the combustion chamber to reduce NOx emissions.

Certain makes and models, such as the Ford 6.0 Powerstroke, are known for having faulty EGR coolers. They break down faster over time due to poor mechanics. When the cooler goes, the exhaust gas will get too hot, which can cause engine damage. Find replacement EGR 6.0 coolers online to keep your vehicle compliant with the latest environmental regulations.

Rent It Out

You can also rent out your vehicle to established trucking companies and even friends and neighbors in your community to make some extra money. Create a listing for your vehicle online, including the make and model, weight and towing capacity, as well as the condition of the vehicle. Make sure anyone you rent it out to has a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. You never know when someone might need to move large or bulky items or haul away something they don’t need.

Renting out your truck instead of driving for a living reduces your liability. You will also have plenty of free time on your hands, but rental fees may not be enough to pay the bills. You might have to work another job on the side; just make sure you don’t need your truck to get there.

Create a Following

If you have the skills and expertise to drive a diesel truck for a living, you can always show them off online by posting on social media. The diesel trucking industry is experiencing a period of massive growth, and there are sure to be thousands of new drivers hitting the road in the coming years.

You can create a YouTube channel, Instagram page or even a TikTok account where you share driving tips with your fans. Create content that registers with people who drive diesel trucks. You can post how-to repair videos and tips on how to live on the road,or record thrilling outdoor adventures. This is a great way to build a name for yourself in the trucking industry. The only thing standing in your way is your imagination.

Once you have built up a following online, you can make money off the videos you post online if the website has a revenue system for content creators.

Get Sponsored

Being a celebrity in the trucking industry can unlock a lot of doors. You can use your fame to get sponsorship contracts with major manufacturers and brand name trucking companies. They will pay you to try out their products and promote them on your social media page. They may also pay for you to attend trade shows and major diesel conventions. You might even get the chance to take a new diesel truck for a test drive.

Keep Your Truck MaintainedIt’s important to maintain your vehicle for safety purposes regardless of how you plan on making a living with your diesel truck. Small issues can create major problems down the road, especially if you are always hauling a heavy load. Shop for replacement diesel parts online to save money on repairs. Nothing could be more important than protecting your vehicle when it is your main source of income.

5 Weird Motorcycle Laws You Probably Don’t Know

Source: PRO Stock Professional/

The U.S. is made up of a patchwork of laws that dictate public, and in some cases private, life. Riding a motorcycle is legal in all 50 states, but state and local governments are free to implement their own rules in the interest of public safety. You might have to adjust your riding style depending on where you’re riding, especially if you plan on crossing state lines on a long road trip. State and local motorcycle laws range from the practical to the absurd. Here are 10 laws that should stand out on your list:

Safe on Red Laws

If you’ve ever waited at a red light on your motorcycle, you know how frustrating it can be. Most intersections with traffic lights have sensors that will change the light depending on whether a vehicle has been detected, but many of these sensors can’t detect motorcycles, leaving you stuck at the red light for what can feel like an eternity.

Some sensors are built into the pavement and will activate the light when a vehicle comes to a stop or drives towards the intersection. These sensors are placed on either side of the lane where a car’s wheels would normally land. More advance sensors emit energy from the traffic light and will change the color if a vehicle is nearby. Both types of sensors can be problematic for motorcycles.

That doesn’t mean you can plow through red lights whenever you want. Driving through a red light can be extremely dangerous, but 12 states and localities have safe-on-red laws that allow motorcyclists to drive through a red light if there is no one coming, including:

  • Arkansas
  • Idaho
  • Illinois
  • Minnesota
  • Missouri
  • Nevada
  • Oklahoma
  • North Carolina
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Virginia
  • Wisconsin

These laws vary from state to state. For example, in North Carolina motorcyclists can legally run a red light if they come to a stop, wait for three minutes, and the light doesn’t change. Regardless of how long you have to wait, every state with safe-on-red laws on the books says you must first check to make sure no one is coming before carefully proceeding through the intersection. The key word there is “carefully”. Go slow and listen for other cars and pedestrians to avoid getting into an accident.

If you hit someone while driving through a red light, these laws will not absolve you of responsibility. You will still have to pay damages and be prosecuted by the full extent of the law.

Clean Your Tires

Minnesota has an obscure law that requires motorcyclists to keep their tires clean. According to the law, dirty tires are “a nuisance that affects public peace, safety, and general welfare.” The idea of someone getting pulled over for dirty tires might sound insane, but all that extra debris can put you at risk, especially if you plan on going off-road. In a rural state like Minnesota, a lot of riders will use ATVs and dirtbikes as motorcycles, or vice-versa. Remember to wipe off your tires before you get back on the road to avoid getting into trouble with the law.

Keep Your Headlights On

Connecticut requires motorcyclists to drive with their headlights on at all times to increase visibility. But you don’t have to use them when operating a motorcycle less than 90cc off-road. Bikes can be hard to spot on the road, so it’s best to light up whenever possible even if you’re not in Connecticut. Just remember to turn off your headlights when you’re done riding to keep your battery intact.

Send Off a Flare

Speaking of visibility, Pennsylvania wants to know your location when you venture off the beaten path on your motorcycle. If you go off-road on your bike, you are required to stop every mile and set off a flare or rocket signal, so other people can find you in an emergency. It’s not clear anyone will be around to see your signal, but it will definitely come in handy if you get lost wandering one of the state’s many national parks.

No Helmet, No Headset

Most states require you to wear a helmet at all times while riding, but Illinois is one of the few exceptions. You should still wear a helmet just to be safe, but the state outlaws motorcycle headsets to keep drivers from getting distracted on the road.

However, most people agree that Bluetooth motorcycle speakers actually improve rider safety. They may even save your life if you get into an accident. Illinois makes an exception for single-earpiece headsets, so one ear stays unencumbered and can listen for traffic. If you use a motorcycle Bluetooth headset, take one ear out when riding in Illinois.

You can also use a half-helmet Bluetooth motorcycle helmet when riding with a half-face helmet or skull cap. The included boom mic will pick up your voice, so you can call for help and safely communicate with your fellow riders as you navigate the road.

Every state has its own way of regulating traffic safety, but some laws verge on the extreme, while others seem counterintuitive. Keep these laws in mind to make sure you are following the rules in every state.

For some, this is what makes commuting to work feel less tasking. Peter Grenier admits to doing this every time he drives to work and simply admires the different car models in New Hampshire. And the more time you are on the road, the higher the chances you will appreciate the models on the road even more.

You Can List The Different Rides On The Road

Another defining quality of a car enthusiast is being able to list different car models. Can you name at least 5 to 10 car models that you saw in the parking lot? Or better yet, maybe you recognize your colleagues or neighbors based on the cars they drive. And these are not just the conspicuous cars. After all, anyone can identify a Ferrari. However, like a real car enthusiast, you will be able to tell that Chevy Nova that passes you every day en route to work.

Constantly Shares Car Photos And Videos

If you scroll through people’s social media accounts, you will be able to tell what some of their interests are. According to Peter Grenier, you can tell people that are car enthusiasts by looking at the photos and videos they share. And this is not just about their cars but other peoples’ cars as well. You will find different models on their page – cars they saw in their neighborhood, parking lot, at the mall, etc. In fact, some users go as far as creating Instagram pages solely dedicated to cars.

Turning Your Head Every Time You Hear An Exhaust Sound

As a car enthusiast, the passion for cars goes beyond the exterior. You get excited when you hear the sound of the engine. Peter Grenier admits that he has been distracted by the sound of a car’s exhaust on many occasions. That need to want to see that car that is producing that sound is what makes you a car enthusiast.

Being a car enthusiast himself, Grenier attends car events around him just to see what is new in the auto industry. And if you have some or all of these traits, then you are definitely a car enthusiast like him.

Samir Allen Farhoumand Discusses the Ins and Outs of the New NASCAR Racecar

Saturday, Feb. 26, 2022, 9:07 AM

Professional race car mechanic Samir Allen Farhoumand discusses the new Cup Series NASCAR racecar.

JACKSONVILLE, FL / FEB. 26, 2022 / NASCAR Cup Series race cars dating back to 1949. This division of NASCAR racing was known for using solely stock race cars. Samir Allen Farhoumand explained that this means the vehicles are ready to race directly off the showroom floor.

“The Cup Series is meant for stock cars, but that has changed greatly over the years,” Farhoumand said. “Cup Series cars became more race cars than stock cars, and the new Next Gen car is taking drivers back to the basics.”

Farhoumand explained that the new Next Gen race car will be released this 2022 season. It will replace the Gen 6 race cars used since 2013.

What Does the Next Gen Look Like?

The Next Gen race car will look different from each maker, including the TRD Camry, Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, and the Ford Mustang. All of the vehicles look sleeker and more coupe-like. Next Gen vehicles have wider tires, shorter deck lids, shorter greenhouses, and aluminum wheels. The wheels will feature a one-lug-nut design that could make wheel changes drastically faster than with the former five-lug-nut design.

A role of the Next Gen vehicle is to put more emphasis on driver skill and car setup. That’s due to the body being completely symmetrical and more aerodynamic.

“One of the greatest advantages of the new Next Gen racecar is that the composite material can withstand greater contact with other vehicles or walls,” Samir Allen Farhoumand said. “Finally, NASCAR has a vehicle that’s more protective without sacrificing performance.”

NASCAR Next Gen Vehicle Components

The Next Gen car offers upgrades similar to those consumers have seen with everyday vehicles. Some features include larger brakes, an independent rear suspension, and a new transaxle that could allow for electrification in the coming years.

The Net Gen includes majorly upgraded connectivity and an in-car camera. Real-time data is now also sent to the fans to keep the car functioning optimally and drivers safe. Repairs and serviceability are now easier due to the new front and rear clips.

Next Gen Power

Farhoumand explained that NASCAR enthusiasts are likely most interested in the downforce and horsepower of the Next Gen. He believes this new design will be more popular than ever because it offers more horsepower and lowers downforce. The engine output is now 670 horsepower at most race tracks. The Next Gen will use a 510 horsepower and 7-inch spoiler at Dayton, Talladega, and Atlanta superspeedways.

About Race Car Mechanic Samir Allen Farhoumand

Farhoumand has been fascinated with all vehicles since he was a child. He grew up watching professional races at Daytona International Speedway. He currently works as a car mechanic in Jacksonville, Fla., and is completing the training required to become a racecar mechanic at the Daytona International Speedway and beyond.

One in Five Cars in the UK Could Be Producing Excessive Diesel Emissions

Diesel vehicles used to be the preferred choice of many car owners because they were cleaner and released lower levels of carbon dioxide than other car engines. However, this changed after the Dieselgate diesel emission scandal exposed cheat device software installed in millions of diesel vehicles worldwide.

Cheat devices, also known as defeat devices, is a software that suppresses NOx (nitrogen oxides) emissions during testing but allows emissions to go over the legal limit when in real-world driving conditions. The device was first discovered in Volkswagen diesel vehicles, but other manufacturers have been implicated in the scandal over the years.

Today, NOx emissions in the UK reportedly total to 17,900 tonnes per year. This is equivalent to more or less an extra 1.4 million vehicles on the roads every year. According to research conducted this year, this number is above the European legal limits. A large chunk of these emissions are released by diesel vehicles that were manufactured from 2009 to 2014 under the Euro 5 and 6 regulations. Regular NOx emissions are typically at 9,500 tonnes per year.

High NOx emissions, along with the defeat devices, signify that UK roads and the environment in general have been exposed to dangerous pollutants for years. Additionally, owners of the affected vehicles have actually been spewing out pollutants every time they went out on the road instead of driving an environmentally friendly vehicle which many believed they had purchased. .

If car manufacturers continue to use manipulative cheat devices and manage to go unpunished  when doing so, all the efforts of the authorities and other sectors of society to keep air pollution at safe levels will be for nothing.

Why nitrogen oxide emissions are dangerous

Nitrogen oxide is a chemical compound and irritant gas that combines nitrogen and oxygen. When fuel combustion happens, nitrogen is released and produces NO or nitric oxide when combined with oxygen atoms. Although nitric oxide is not dangerous, it can be when it merges with oxygen and forms NO2 or nitrogen dioxide. NO2 is hazardous to human health and the environment.

Together, NO and NO2 are  known as nitrogen oxides or NOx. This is what vehicles emit when they are out on the road. NOx is specifically emitted by the vehicles’ engines.

Nitrogen oxides form acid rain, smog, ground level ozone, and PM or fine particles. These are all known to have negative effects on the health of anyone exposed to NOx gases.

Exposure to NOx can cause respiratory problems. If exposed for long periods, it can cause asthma. It can also affect the pulmonary system and can even cause and/or worsen bronchitis, pneumonitis, emphysema, and pulmonary edema. Long exposure may also lead to a blood disorder known as methemoglobinemia. NOx is also dangerous for individuals suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Aside from respiratory problems, continuous exposure to nitrogen oxides may also cause disease and health issues related or leading to diabetes, heart disease, and birth defects.

Children who are constantly exposed to nitrogen oxides are at risk of developing respiratory infections and may even suffer from permanent obstructive and restrictive lung disease.

Nitrogen oxides are also responsible for producing toxic products when they react with ozone and certain organic chemicals. Examples of these products include nitrosamines and nitroarenes. Nitrosamines are carcinogenic and nitroarenes are a combination of concentrated sulphuric acid and concentrated nitric acid.
